Best contact time: 1:40-2:50 (during my planning time)
My name is Samuel Mauney. I would like to welcome you to my eighth grade language arts class at Red Springs Middle School! This is my 8th year teaching Language Arts at RSMS and 5th year in the 8th grade. We have some exciting things going on this year in my class!
The State of North Carolina uses the Common Core Standards for Language Arts. Basically, what this means is that we will be concentrating on five separate areas in our curriculum: reading for literature, reading for information, writing, speaking and listening, and language. The Common Core focus is to have students working interactively on project-based learning.
In order to accomplish these goals this year, we will be reading a wide variety of materials – such as novels, informational texts, short stories, and poetry. We will also have a strong focus on writing and speaking/listening skills development. Since the new program is strongly project based, students will be working on several projects throughout the year. Students will be given some time to work on these projects at school. However, they may also need to take trips to the public library for research purposes if a computer is not available at home.
On the first day of class, each student will receive a copy of the 8th grade ELA syllabus. This syllabus contains the guidelines and procedures that will be followed in both 8th grade ELA classrooms including my own. Also included in this syllabus is a supply list for materials each student will need for the year. (A copy of this syllabus can also be found on this website).
Again, I would like to welcome you to my Language Arts class. I am looking forward to a great year! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by email or by calling the school.
