    What is this selection/story/book mostly about?

    What is the main idea of this selection/story/book?

    Choose a word from a paragraph in the story/book/selection and have the child tell you what it means based on the context clues.

    What word or words best describe the kind of person that the main character is? (Give your child some chooses that fit the character-helpful, kind, generous, intelligent, curious, greedy, etc. Please do not use happy or nice.)

    Have the child explain to you what happened because of the main character’s actions. For example: What happened after Amanda’s father took the pies to the gold mine?

    What is the mood of the selection?

    Why did the author write this story? Was it to inform, entertain, or persuade?

    Choose two characters or things from the story/selection and have the child tell you how they are alike.
