• Our mission at Communities in Schools (CIS) is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people learn, stay in school, and prepare for life. Kids need to know that they are cared about, safe and secure, and expected to succeed. They also need skills and technology that will lead to a lifetime of learning and success.

Site coordinators at 5 locations recruit volunteers and provide tutoring opportunities and leadership bringing community resources into the schools for students and their families. During the past school year, the resources of the Robeson County Health Department Health Plus Bus provided health services at these schools as well. Support Our Students at Pembroke Middles School is an after school program that provides a safe, creative and educational atmosphere for homework tutoring, community service projects, recreation and team building activities. The Great Leaps Reading program engages some 400 students in 11 elementary and middle schools in daily reading exercises that stress phonics, sight words and phrases. Research shows that Great Leaps students are more motivated, exhibit fewer behavior problems and are more attentive to academic tasks in the classroom. Finally CIS Academy Charter School in Pembroke has 107 students in middle school.

For well over a decade CIS of Robeson County, a United Way agency, has recruited and trained volunteers. Last year over 450 volunteers provided 17,000 + hours of service to over 1,000 students at 17 sites in our public school system. Evaluation at school year end includes recording student success in the areas of grades, attendance and improved behavior.
