         Laurence A. Harvey is currently celebrating his 25th year as Director of Bands at Lumberton High School and his 35th year as a career Band Director. Harvey received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1976 from Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. There he served as Vice President of the University Band Programs. Harvey, a low brass musician, has studied with Ken Granville, Janice Harcar, and Gary Tirey, in addition to clinics and residencies with the famed  Harvey Phillips and William “Bill” Moffit.  Harvey has taught at every level of the elementary and secondary school systems. During his earlier career he was Director of Bands at Elyria West High School in Elyria, Ohio, where he built the band program while performing at seasonal Band Concerts, District Concert Festivals, and Marching Band Competitions. He also created the first marching band competition festival at his school.

          In 1988 he began his North Carolina Band Directing at Westover Senior High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In 1989 he accepted the position of Director of Bands at Lumberton High School in Lumberton, North Carolina where he continued with the success of the prestigious Lumberton High Band Programs. There his concert bands received superior ratings in Grades III, IV, V, and VI in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2012. His Marching Bands at Lumberton High School have won 5 grand championships and numerous 1st place and caption awards in class 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A. His Marching bands have also competed in the Bands of America Regionals in Atlanta in 1999 and 2000. They have also marched in various Walt Disney World Parades in 2003, 2005, and 2007. Harvey is a member of F.A.M.E., the North Carolina Band Masters Association, and the Robeson County Band Director’s Association. Harvey’s students have consistently participated in All-County, All-District, and North Carolina State Honor Band. In 1997, four of his students were selected to attend the North Carolina Governor’s School Program and in 2010 one of his students was selected for the U.S. Army All-American High School Marching Band . Harvey received the City of Lumberton Humanism Award in 1995 for his work with his students in the renowned “Lumberton Marching Pirates.”  Harvey is highly regarded for creating and reviving Marching Band Contests with his Band Booster Clubs. He was also President of the Robeson County Foster Association in 2008 serving over 400 children in time of need and 150 Foster Parents. He and his family are currently member's of Saint Mark's Lutheran Church in Lumberton while he is serving as Vice-President on the Executive Committee.  Harvey was awarded the Southeastern District Band Director's Excellence Award for the 2010-2011 school year by his colleagues. He recently recieved the 2012 Lumberton High School Teacher Impact Award. Harvey is happily married to Melanie Suzanne, and has 6 children Heather Slade, Laurence Alan II, Jeremy Nicholas, Jorge Cameron, Candice Ivelesse, Daisy Marabella, and 5 Grand Children, Slade Alexander, Evelynn James, Zane,  Lauren Elizabeth, and Lilly Grace.
