As your social worker, I have many duties at your child's school. I monitor student attendance by ensuring that notes have been turned into the teacher when absent from school. It is very important that when your child is absent from school that we receive a doctor's note, parent note, court documentation, or educational leave approval. Once three unexcused absences have been documented, a letter is mailed to you to inform you of the absences. When the student receives six unexcused absences, another letter is mailed to inform you of the absences, telephone calls are made, and home visits are completed. Once your child receives ten unexcused absences, it will be very important to make contact with me in order to avoid court action. According to North Carolina General Statute 115C-378, once a child accumulates 10 or more unexcused absences, parents, guardians, or custodians may be charged with failing to send the child to school
I provide assistance to families with referrals to agencies regarding behavior issues, housing, transportion, medical assistance, juvenile justice and child welfare. Coordination of these services will provide the student with the opportunity to enhance their education. If there is concern that a child is being abused or neglected, a referral may be made to the Department of Social Services. When dealing with a student that is undisciplined or delinquent, a referral may be made to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
I assist teachers and support staff with making telephone calls in reference to tardies, early dismissals, student absences and behavior. I also assist with concerns regarding student hygiene, student medical needs, and student learning disabilies. I assist with the BakPak program which provides children with nutritious snacks at home over the weekend.
