EOG TESTING HINTS/CLUES

  • Remind students that the test is important.

  • THINK! Read, Listen, and Follow directions carefully.

  • Come up with the answer in your head before looking at the possible answers.

  • This way the choices given on the test will not throw you off or trick you.

  • Eliminate answers you know are not right.

  • Read all the choices before choosing your answer.

  • If you are not sure of the answer, always take an educated guess and select an answer.

  • Do not keep on changing your answer. Usually your first choice is the right one, unless you miss-read the question.

  • Usually the correct answer is the choice with the most information.

  • Mark, write, highlight ((highlight) in the book.

  • Manage your time. Answer the easy questions first, then go back and work on the difficult ones.

  • Answer ALL questions.

  • Pay close attention to headings, titles, bold print, and italics.

  • Use estimation to check answers.

  • Reassure the students they do not have to answer all the questions correctly to pass.

  • Look for key words in the test directions and questions such as: choose, describe, explain, compare, identify, similar, except, not, and but.

  • Stay focused on the test.

  • Usually your first choice is correct.

  • When reading the selection, keep in mind to read slowly, reread complex and important sentences, and ask yourself often “What does this sentence, paragraph, stanza or passage mean?”

  • All tests have some hard questions. They are meant to stump you. It is best to make a good guess at the answer. First, find any answers that you know are wrong. Then look at the left over choices and make your best guess.

  • Listen attentively to last minute instructions given by instructor.

  • Plan how you will use the time for the test.

  • When you have completed the test, use the remaining time effectively (check back over test).

  • Use the process of elimination when you are not sure of the answer.

  •  When two very similar answers appear, it is likely that one of them is the correct choice.

  •  Watch for key words (always, never, all, etc.) in the instructions or in the main question.

  • Remind students they should answer all questions and NEVER LEAVE ONE BLANK.

  •  Keep a steady pace and do not let more difficult questions affect your attitude and steal valuable time.
