This model provides an opportunity for students in the school to voice concerns and dialogue concerning specific fears and perspectives. Additionally, resolutions or ideas regarding diversity and sensitivity issues may be generated. Of course, the most significant example for our students, system wide, is the recognition that administrators, parents, and community adults are concerned. We should demonstrate that we care about the well-being of our students. It is in this spirit, that adults, educators, parents, and leaders in our communities and school system must work together. We will model healthy relationships, cooperation, and respect among diverse people. Today, we should reflect this belief, model such dialogue and empower our young people to recognize justice, tolerance, and equality.

The model may be implemented as follows:

Adults in this proposed model are all familiar adults.

One of the adults will scribe or take minutes of each session.

A flip chart and markers will be available.

A power point presentation may be constructed.

A survey may be distributed or placed in strategic places in the school.

1. Introduction of adults.
2. Introduction of all students, by each student.
3. Introduction of Ground Rules

  1. Discussion and dialogue will be used to assist in resolving issues within the school. Still, a ground rule will be one of confidentiality. What is discussed in the room and specifically who said what, will remain in the room. The adults may take general information, and use it to assist in developing resolutions as formulated by the students.
  2. Respect. One person will speak at a time. The person may raise his hand or signal that there is something he/she wishes to contribute.
  3. The person who is speaking will be given the opportunity to voice all his/her thoughts without someone interrupting him/her.
  4. Counselor will begin with the following: "As we are all aware, unfortunate (acts, behaviors) have occurred in the last weeks. We are here because we want every student to know- safe schools are a concern of ours-and we are looking to you as students to help us understand what has been occurring among the students, schools, and within the communities.
  5. What are some incidents you have experienced in the school?
    When did these problems begin? (Students will be able to discuss beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors. Students will be able to pinpoint origin of attitudes and behaviors).
  6. Do you believe/think outside things have influenced the emotions and the reactions, of the students in the school? How so?
  7. How do you think the problems have been handled here at the school? How could they have been handled differently?
  8. What would you offer as some solutions? How could we go about resolving these issues?

A compiled list (without student names linked to any item) will generate out of this discussion.
