JROTC students

LUMBERTON — Top JROTC cadets from Lumberton, Fairmont, Red Springs, St. Pauls and Purnell Swett high schools will attend JROTC Cadet Leadership Camp at Camp Carolina this summer.

This seven-day JROTC summer camp is held at Fort Jackson, South Carolina where approximately 900 Cadets from both North Carolina and South Carolina Army JROTC programs will meet.

Cadets attending the camp have good physical training scores, possess strong leadership skills, and are in good academic standing, said Col. Mondrey McLaurin, Lumberton High School Senior Army Instructor and JROTC Instructor.

During the leadership camp, cadets will be fully engaged in activities such as rappelling, canoeing, obstacle courses, zip lines, orienteering, STEM, drill and ceremonies, and various other team-building events.

Some of the cadets traveling to camp will attend a drone class. If cadets pass the 32-hour FAA Remote Pilot certification-producing course and test, they will receive their drone certification. Topics in the course include FAA regulations, Airspace Management, Aviation Weather, Communications, Airport operations, and maintenance/pre-flight procedures.

These cadets have already registered and set up their accounts in both FAA’s Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) and received their individual FTN (FAA Tracking Number).

“The intent is to challenge cadets in a rigid environment and develop their leadership, communication, and social skills,” McLaurin said.“Cadets also have the chance to participate in citizenship-building exercises and participate in adventure training not normally available at their school location. The camp also provides them an opportunity to experience living and interacting with their peers from other schools in a military-type setting,” McLaurin said.

Cadets will depart for camp this Sunday and return next Saturday, he said.
