LUMBERTON — A Lumberton High School student has been named the recipient of the 2024-2025 Battle of the Books Scholarship.
Sonya Jean Harden was presented the $500 Battle of the Books Scholarship on Monday, June 2, 2025 at Lumberton High School by former PSRC Media Supervisor Dr. Etta Baldwin, who established the scholarship, and PSRC officials.
The Battle of the Books program consists of team-based competitions where students from various schools read a variety of books and are quizzed on the contents of those books.
“Participating in Battle of the Books taught me much more than just how to memorize titles, authors, or plot points. It taught me how to pay attention to detail, collaborate with others, and speak with confidence,” Harden wrote in her scholarship application.
“My love for reading, especially through programs like Battle of the Books, has been one of the most meaningful influences in my academic journey and future ambitions,” Harden added.
This fall, Sonya will attend Appalachian State University, where she plans to study digital journalism and pursue her passion for storytelling and impactful communication.
The scholarship was established in 2023 by Dr. Etta Baldin to promote the love of reading and encourage students to participate in the competition. To be eligible, students were to be accepted at a two or four-year post-secondary educational institution, submit a completed application for the scholarship and have participated and competed in the Public Schools of Robeson County Battle of the Books program for at least one school year within their academic career. The scholarship committee reviewed all submissions and selected the scholarship recipient.
Sonya’s mother Adrian Harden shared words of excitement for her daughter’s receipt of the scholarship and future plans.
“I'm so proud of Sonya,” Adrian Harden said.
“She has always loved to read. She gets her passion and love for reading from her aunt Melissa Cade. Even before she was born we were reading to her. I wish the best for her and pray all her goals and dreams are reached,” she added.
PSRC Media Supervisor Cindi Humphrey said participating in Battle of the Books helps students achieve, learn and grow.
“Sonya’s success shows the impact that reading and programs like Battle of the Books can have on students. We wish her all the best as she starts her journey at Appalachian State University,” Humphrey said.
