Lumberton FFA receives Living to Serve Grant from National FFA Organization.
INDIANAPOLIS (Monday, September, 19, 2022/National FFA Organization) – The Lumberton FFA chapter in Lumberton, NC has been awarded a Fall Semester-Long Living to Serve Grant in the amount of $1,200. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support semester-long service-learning projects that address needs related to community safety; environmental responsibility; hunger, health and nutrition; and community engagement during the fall semester.
Lumberton FFA plans to help address environmental concerns of the Bradford Pear Tree. Members will be removing Bradford Pear trees from campus & will be replacing those with trees from the Forestry Tree ID list that are more native to the area. Students will gain hands on learning from the removal of trees & replanting of trees.
This project will be infused into classroom learning by living out the motto: learning to do, doing to learn. Students in the Sustainable Ag Production class will combine with the Natural Resources Class and the Horticulture class to learn how to remove the Bradford Pear Trees on campus. These three classes will also learn how replant new trees on campus. Students will also learn about the invasive species of the Bradford Pear tree. Students will also be able to utilize the new trees planted on campus to be better prepared for the Forestry CDE. All new trees will come from the NC FFA Forestry Tree ID list. These trees are native to the area and will maximize student learning in the Natural Resources Class.
