LUMBERTON — The Public Schools of Robeson County recently welcomed a new Family Engagement Specialist to the team.
Gabrielle Dunlap stepped into the role effective May 11 with a host of experience working in areas that support student learning and youth development. She worked most recently as a Program Assistant/ Tutoring Coordinator at the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office Police Activities League Program, where she supported academic enrichment initiatives and youth-focused programming.
She previously worked as a tutor with Dallas ISD and Fort Worth ISD in Texas, focusing on House Bill 4545 by providing targeted tutoring and supplemental instruction to students following the effects of COVID-19.
Earlier in her career, she served as Program Coordinator at Reading Partners, where she gained experience in literacy instruction and tutor coaching. She also worked as a Program Assistant for the Empowering Youth & Families Program through North Carolina State University, supporting youth and their parents or caregivers to strengthen family cohesiveness. Her background includes experience in education, mentoring and community engagement.
“I have worked with youth and families for about 10 years, serving in roles focused on student support, family engagement, community outreach, and youth development. I have experience working in areas including social-emotional learning, student housing, juvenile justice, 4-H, opioid prevention, literacy, and tutoring,” Dunlap said.
“These experiences have allowed me to work closely with students, families, schools and community partners to help create supportive environments that promote student growth and success,” she added.
As Family Engagement Specialist, Dunlap will serve as a vital liaison between schools and families, working to strengthen communication, encourage parental involvement, and support student success through outreach, training, and engagement initiatives.
She will also coordinate family engagement programs, develop community partnerships, provide resources to families and staff and ensure compliance with federal and district requirements.
“Throughout my career, I have learned the value of listening, building trust, and approaching challenges with empathy and a solutions-focused mindset,” she said.
“My experiences in areas such as social-emotional learning, family engagement, juvenile justice, student support services, and youth development have given me a broader perspective on the barriers some students and families face, as well as the importance of creating supportive systems and opportunities for success,” she added.
Dunlap also shared her goals for the program.
“My goal is to strengthen the connection between home and school so every student can thrive,” she said.
Dunlap looks forward to building connections and relationships with families, schools and stakeholders to support student success.
“I believe strong communication, collaboration, and trust between schools, families, and the community are essential to supporting student growth and achievement,” she said.
