ST. PAULS – The St. Pauls High School Battle of the Books team made history this year as the first high school team from the Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) to compete at the state level.
Reflecting on their experience, team member Breylin Finklea shared, “All things considered, it was a very enjoyable experience. Every year I've participated I have done well and had my eyes opened to many different genres of literature and writers I normally wouldn't show any interest in. And although we may not have been the best, we still made history and I wouldn't trade that for anything.”
Katie Joaquin Flores said she has goals to achieve even more next year.
“Our team being the first high school in the district to actually compete at the state competition was really exciting. My goal is that we do better next year and learn from our mistakes,” she said.
The team, made up of dedicated and high-achieving students, balanced rigorous academic schedules with various extracurricular commitments—including FFA, NHS, Beta Club, after-school jobs, and robotics. Despite limited full-team practices, their determination led them to the highest stage in the state.
“Our young scholars are awesome!” said advisors Bonnie Rogers and Tiffany Scott-Houser. “We couldn't be more proud of them. They have overcome so many obstacles and worked hard to prioritize family life, school, and competition prep. We are already preparing for next year!”
Balancing various activities was challenging for students, but one student said she is grateful for the experience.
“Prioritizing reading, academics, and other extracurricular activities at times can be challenging. It requires time management, but it's worth it because it strengthens my knowledge, builds teamwork, and allows me to grow in multiple areas,” Mia Lopez Reyna said.
Jazmin Tapia offered advice to future Battle of the Books team members.
“Believe in yourself,” she said. “Winning the competition takes hard work and a positive mindset. That will take you further than you would've ever thought possible.”
The St. Pauls High School Battle of the Books Team's accomplishment not only sets a new precedent for the district but also serves as a powerful reminder of what students can achieve through resilience, teamwork, and a passion for learning.
