LUMBERTON, NC—Lumber River United Way has partnered with the Public Schools of Hoke and Robeson County to assist with a summer camp for homeless students. LRUW has stepped up to address systemic change in the public school system by targeting the root causes of social issues (in this case, homeless students) instead of directly tackling the problem through educational achievement.

“Lumber River United Way strives to meet the needs in the community by bridging gaps where funding needs are often overlooked,” said Director of Community Impact, Tomeika Munn. “Without the dedication of grantors such as Duke Energy, we would be unable to assist these needs in the public school system."

Duke Energy funding will sponsor children who are often unnoticed due to homelessness and would not be able to go on an extravagant vacation or attend a nice summer camp. Duke Energy grant funding will also reduce barriers and promote access to open up opportunities for underserved communities. It will assist communities facing unprecedented challenges due to uncontrollable external factors.

The McKinney-Vento Summer Camp project will address the root causes of social issues with often-overlooked homeless students. During the summer break, the camp will focus on STEM and social emotional learning.
