ROBESON COUNTY — The Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) has been named a Rural Non-Congregate Meals Innovation Summer Nutrition Champion by the NC Department of Public Instruction and the Carolina Hunger Initiative at the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. This prestigious recognition honors districts that demonstrate exceptional commitment, creativity, and impact in ensuring children have access to healthy meals throughout the summer months.
PSRC earned this award for its innovative approach to providing meals to families in underserved rural areas, a model that helped eliminate barriers to food access across the county. Led with dedication and heart by PSRC Child Nutrition Services Director Charlene Locklear and the entire School Nutrition Team, PSRC implemented strategies that ensured children consistently received essential nutrition during a time when many families face increased food insecurity.
“Mrs. Charlene and her team went above and beyond to meet the needs of children in Robeson County,” said Thompson Bertschy, Program Specialist with the Carolina Hunger Initiative. “Their tireless efforts to feed children in the community truly set them apart. We are grateful for their dedication, and we are pleased to share that Robeson County Schools has been selected as a winner of the Rural Non-Congregate Summer Nutrition Champion Award.”
Representatives from PSRC were recognized recently at the SummerPalooza event in Raleigh, where the district received an official banner and certificate from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
“This honor reflects the unwavering commitment of our School Nutrition Team to serve children with excellence, compassion, and innovation,” said PSRC Superintendent Dr. Freddie Williamson. “We are very proud of their work and grateful for the difference they make in the lives of our students and families.”
