NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF ROBESON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION


Notice is hereby given that the Public Schools of Robeson County Board of Education will hold a public hearing regarding the proposed naming of the Robeson Career and Technical Education Center.

The public hearing is scheduled for:

Date: Thursday, July 9, 2026 

Time: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. 

Location: Lumberton Junior High School Auditorium

Lumberton, NC 28358

Purpose

The purpose of the hearing is to receive public input concerning the potential naming of the Robeson Career and Technical Education Center. Community members are invited to attend and share comments for the Board’s consideration.

Board policy provides: “The purpose of a public hearing is to gather information and hear opinions from the community.  Generally, Board members will respond only to seek clarification.”

Public Hearing Guidelines

Individuals who wish to speak must sign up in advance by using the following link: https://forms.gle/AsMwW9eojqJyHrAB9 or by signing up in person, between 4:30 p.m. and 5:25 p.m. at the site of the public hearing on July 9, 2026.  Individuals wishing to speak must list their name and address and must restrict their comments to the subject of the public hearing:  The potential naming of the Robeson Career and Technical Education Center.  Speakers are limited to no more than three (3) minutes each.  Groups or organizations wishing to express themselves are requested to designate a single spokesperson to represent the group’s position.  When the allotted time expires or when the listed speakers are done, the chairperson shall declare the hearing ended.  No action will be taken during the public hearing.  The issue discussed may be placed on the agenda of a subsequent Board meeting.

Board Policy

The public is advised of the following criteria to be considered, as provided  in Board Policy 9300, Naming  Facilities:

The board will consider the following criteria as well as other factors the board determines to be relevant in identifying potential names for the facility.

1. The name should not be so similar to the names of existing facilities as to cause confusion.

2. The name should include a designation of the type of school, such as elementary, middle, or high, or a brief description of a specialized kind of school.

3. Schools should be named for geographic areas, when possible; however, school facilities or specific parts of a facility may be named in honor or memory of a distinguished individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the school system, a school within the system, or to the community, county, state, or nation.  The individual must have obtained a record of recognizable excellence in his or her respective field evidenced by a variety of outstanding accomplishments, awards, and leadership and service roles.  The individual must have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and been a positive role model for others.  He or she must also have exhibited values like honesty, integrity, respect, sense of fairness, concern for others, self-discipline, teamwork, and dedication to work.

This notice is provided in accordance with applicable North Carolina laws and Board policies.
