PEMBROKE — There’s a buzz in the air at Pembroke Elementary School, where strong community roots, a distinctive hive-like design and a commitment to helping every student “bee” all they can be make the school a special part of the Pembroke community.

Those ties run deep. Located near the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, the school serves a community rich in history and pride while maintaining strong connections with the families and community members who support its students.

Even the layout of the school reflects its identity. Classrooms are arranged in pod configurations throughout the building, creating a hive-like configuration where Pembroke Elementary Bees move throughout their school day learning, growing and supporting one another.

But what truly keeps the hive buzzing is the people inside it.

Pembroke Elementary is focused on creating an environment where every child is valued, supported and encouraged to grow. Principal Portia Brazelton credits the dedication of staff, support of families and daily efforts of students with creating a school community centered on learning, leadership and meaningful relationships.

“My heart is in Pembroke Elementary where every child is believed in, every success is celebrated, and every person feels like family,” she said.

The school’s theme, “Level Up,” represents a shared focus on helping students reach new heights through strong instruction, meaningful relationships and a positive school culture, the principal said.

The 2025–2026 school year marked an outstanding year of growth and achievement for Pembroke Elementary School. The school improved its School Performance Grade from a D to a C while exceeding expected growth. Student proficiency also increased in reading, math and science.

This year, students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, embrace new challenges and approach opportunities with confidence. At the same time, educators will continue supporting students academically, socially and emotionally.

At Pembroke Elementary, school leaders believe students are better positioned to succeed when they know the people around them believe in their potential.

“At Pembroke Elementary, we believe that when students feel seen and cared for, they are better able to grow academically, socially, and emotionally,” Brazelton said.

With a community behind them, educators beside them and new opportunities ahead, Pembroke Elementary Bees are ready to spread their wings, rise to the challenge and “Level Up” together, she said.
