As we continue to welcome students into a new school year, it’s important to remember that learning thrives in a safe and supportive environment. Mental health is a critical part of student success and when we create space for conversations about wellbeing, we help every child feel seen, valued, and cared for.
This month, schools across the country are joining together to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24, but it is also preventable, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Each of us plays a role in fostering connection, building resilience, and ensuring students know they are never alone.
What You Can Do:
~ Stay alert to warning signs: Withdrawal , major changes in mood or behavior, hopeless statements, or talk of self-harm.
~ Respond with care: Take every concern seriously. Listen , remain calm, and connect the student immediately with a counselor or administrator.
~ Promote seeking help: Remind students that it’s always okay to ask for help, whether it’s from a teacher, counselor, coach , or trusted adult.
Together, let’s start this school year with a commitment to both academic success and emotional wellbeing. Every student deserves to feel connected, supported, and safe.
