MAXTON – The Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) was honored to welcome the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission recently, for an in-depth look at the district’s instructional priorities, collaborative leadership, and innovative student opportunities.
During the visit on Thursday, December 4, members of the Commission engaged with district leaders to learn more about PSRC’s comprehensive strategic plan and the coordinated efforts of the Cabinet, including Curriculum and Instruction, Human Resources, Auxiliary Services, and Student Support Services. District administrators shared how these departments work collectively to strengthen academic outcomes, support staff development, and enhance the overall student experience.
“As a Commission member, it meant a great deal to see our team welcomed so sincerely and to watch our district’s work highlighted with genuine pride,” said Taleek Harlee, Vice Chair of NCTF Commission, who also serves as an FFA advisor at the school. “We have so much to be proud of and even more ahead of us.”
The Commission also received an overview of PSRC’s robust Career and Technical Education programs, including the district’s growing partnership with Technology Engineering and Design. A highlight of the day included recognition of Purnell Swett High School’s jFFA chapter, whose students delivered an impressive presentation showcasing their achievements and ongoing initiatives.
“We sincerely appreciate the warm welcome, the thoughtful collaboration, and the wealth of information shared with our team during the visit. This information is invaluable as we continue working to recruit, prepare and support future teachers across the state,” said Dr. Arine Lowery, North Carolina Teaching Fellows Director.
Site visits with district partners, such as the Public Schools of Robeson County, give NC Teaching Fellows directors and commissioners valuable insight into the unique opportunities each institution can provide for preservice teachers. These visits help ensure that Fellows are well prepared to serve the communities where they will study and train, should they choose to accept the scholarship at one of the ten partner institutions.
“We look forward to future opportunities to collaborate and celebrate the great work happening in PSRC and at Purnell Swett High School,” Dr. Lowery added.
As part of the tour, visitors explored Purnell Swett High School’s new Multipurpose Building, a state-of-the-art facility designed to expand instructional and extracurricular opportunities for students. PSHS FFA President Cornelia Oxendine and PSHS FFA Vice President Zyra Bullard also gave a tour of the Purnell Swett FFA Agri-Learning Area Greenhouse.
Throughout the visit, district leaders emphasized the innovative practices, expanded pathways, and continuous improvements that are shaping student success across Robeson County.
“We are grateful to the NC Teaching Fellows Commission for taking the time to visit our district and learn more about the important work happening in our schools,” said PSRC Superintendent Dr. Freddie Williamson. “Their commitment to developing future educators aligns with our mission to educate, inspire and empower every student.”
PSRC extends its appreciation to all staff, students, and partners who contributed to making the visit a meaningful and informative experience.
