LUMBERTON, N.C. – The Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) proudly hosted the 2025 North Carolina Scholars Award Luncheon Thursday at the Southeastern Agricultural Center, celebrating high-achieving high school seniors for their academic excellence and commitment to scholarship.
The luncheon, held at 11:30 a.m., brought together students, educators, family members, and community leaders to recognize the achievements of the Class of 2025. These students earned the prestigious NC Scholar designation by meeting rigorous academic standards set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
The ceremony began with a formal Posting of the Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by welcoming remarks, lunch, words of inspiration and recognition for each student by PSRC leaders and Board of Education members.
Attendees enjoyed a luncheon accompanied by entertainment from PSRC Music Educator Mary Elizabeth Locklear, who performed “Over the Rainbow.” Her performance highlighted the artistic talents within the district and brought several attendees to their feet in applause.
Marcus Thompson, Athletic Director at Fairmont High School, delivered an inspiring message on perseverance, motivation, and how to prepare for bright futures ahead for these distinguished scholars. Thompson encouraged students to be coachable, fight through adversity to reach their potential, and to seek God.
“You are the future. You are the future doctors, the future teachers, the future coaches, entrepreneurs, and world changers,” he said.
“Adversity forces you to ask yourself ‘how bad do you want it’…,” he said. “If you can learn not to allow adversity to change your mind about the goals you have put before you, but instead use adversity as a tool to produce steadfastness and strength, with God you can be unstoppable.”
The PSRC Cabinet and Board of Education members congratulated each scholar in attendance for their academic excellence.
Multiple PSRC Board of Education members and Robeson County Commissioner Pauline Campbell shared advice for students, encouraging them to keep going and to lean on their faith to help them achieve success.
Superintendent Dr. Freddie Williamson delivered closing remarks, applauding the resilience and dedication of the students, before the ceremonial Retiring of the Colors concluded the event.
“This celebration is a reflection of the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment you have demonstrated throughout your high school journey,” said Dr. Williamson.
“We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and look forward to the positive impact you will make in our community and beyond. Each of you must answer this phrase and only you can answer it for yourselves: ‘my life is…’ You have the power to fill in the blank. You have the power to decide,” he said.
